Ultrasound

Clear answers,
delivered with care

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of structures within the body.

At OceanMed, we provide comprehensive ultrasound services in a calm, private setting - supporting everything from routine screening to advanced diagnostic evaluation. Because ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, it is safe during pregnancy and suitable for a wide range of medical assessments.

Our experienced imaging team works closely with specialist radiologists to ensure accurate interpretation and timely results.

What we can assess

OceanMed provides a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound services including:

What to expect during your ultrasound

Depending on the type of scan, you may be asked to come to your appointment with a full bladder or fasted. You may also be asked to change into a gown. Your sonographer will explain the process before beginning.

A warm, water-based gel is applied to the area being examined. A handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the skin to capture images. The gel is a clear, hypoallergenic substance and is safe for all patients.

The images are reviewed by a specialist radiologist. Reports are typically available within two business days and sent directly to your referring physician, who will discuss the results and next steps with you.

How to prepare for an ultrasound

Preparation requirements vary depending on the type of ultrasound you are scheduled for. Please review the guidance below.

Please fast for at least 8 hours before your appointment. Morning appointments are preferred where possible. You may continue taking your usual medications. If you are diabetic, please inform OceanMed at the time of booking.

A full bladder is required for this examination. Please drink 750 ml to 1 litre of water, finishing approximately one hour before your appointment, and avoid emptying your bladder until after the scan.

No preparation is required.

A full bladder is not required. Eating approximately 30 minutes before your appointment may help encourage baby movement during the scan. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Please wear a two-piece outfit with a top that can be easily removed, as you will be asked to undress from the waist up. Avoid applying deodorant, perfume, lotions, or powders to the underarm or breast area on the day of your appointment.
