Mammography is a low-dose X-ray exam used to screen for breast cancer, often before symptoms are present. Traditional 2D mammography captures flat images of the breast, while 3D mammography creates layered views that allow radiologists to examine the tissue in greater detail. While 2D mammography may be the lower-cost option, 3D imaging can offer a more complete view by reducing tissue overlap and helping reveal findings that may be less visible on 2D images.

The entire exam is typically quick and straightforward.
All images are interpreted by specialist radiologists. Reports are typically available within two business days and, where possible, compared with prior studies for continuity.
If you are premenopausal, we recommend scheduling your mammogram approximately one week after the start of your period, when breast tenderness is typically lower. If you experience significant tenderness before your cycle, try to avoid booking your appointment during that time.
Please wear a comfortable two-piece outfit with a top that can be easily removed, as you will be asked to undress from the waist up. Your privacy and comfort will be supported by our experienced, all-female imaging team throughout your visit.
For the most accurate imaging results, please avoid wearing jewellery and do not apply deodorant, perfume, lotion or powders to the underarm or breast area.
No fasting is required before a mammogram. You may eat and drink as normal.
If you have had prior mammograms or breast imaging, please bring the images and reports with you (or arrange for them to be sent ahead). Comparing current and previous studies helps our radiologists interpret results more accurately and can reduce the need for additional testing.
Screening mammograms are generally recommended from age 40, or earlier if advised by your physician based on personal or family history of breast cancer. If you have concerns about breast health at any age, we encourage you to book a consultation with our team.

Some women experience brief discomfort during compression, which is necessary to obtain clear images. OceanMed uses the GE Senographe Pristina system, which features a flexible compression paddle designed to distribute pressure more evenly and reduce discomfort. Your mammogram is performed by our experienced female radiographer, who will guide you through each step.
A breast biopsy may be recommended if an area of concern is identified on your mammogram or ultrasound. The procedure involves removing a small sample of tissue, which is then examined by a pathologist to determine its nature.

Your doctor will review your imaging and explain why a biopsy is recommended. Most biopsies are performed under local anaesthesia.
Imaging guidance (ultrasound or 3D mammography) is used to precisely target the area of concern. A small sample of tissue is removed for laboratory analysis.
Biopsies are typically day procedures, meaning you can return home the same day. You will be asked to rest for 20 minutes in our recovery area before leaving.

After your biopsy, you will rest for 20 minutes in our women’s-only lounge. You will be able to drive yourself home. You will be provided with an aftercare document which gives clear details on how to care for your biopsy site.
