As well as breast imaging we offer the following ultrasounds:
Abdominal Ultrasound:
Your doctor may order this test to check your abdominal organs such as your liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas and aorta. This ultrasound is done in cases of abdominal pain, abnormal liver function tests or to rule out appendicitis or gallstones.
Pelvic Ultrasound:
We assess the uterus, ovaries and endometrial lining, scanning both outside and with a vaginal probe to visualize as well as possible. A pelvic ultrasound may be done to investigate irregular periods, heavy bleeding, pain, to look at IUCD position, follow up ovarian cysts or to monitor follicles during fertility treatments.
Pelvic Floor Ultrasound:
The scan will show problems such as prolapse of the bladder, uterus, rectum and bowel. In addition, it will show if there has been previous damage to the pelvic floor muscles and/or anal canal during childbirth. If you previously had ‘mesh implants’ or a sling inserted, these may also be seen on the scan.
Renal Ultrasound:
This is a dedicated ultrasound to check the kidneys, ureters and bladder. This might be ordered to look for kidney infections, stones or incontinence.
Thyroid Ultrasound:
This ultrasound looks at the thyroid gland, salivary glands and lymph nodes. It may be ordered in cases of goiters, abnormal thyroid hormones or neck lumps.
Soft Tissue Ultrasound:
We can also do targeted ultrasounds to look at lumps or for infection in other parts of the body.
Venous Ultrasound:
We can check the veins in your legs or arms for clot (deep venous thrombosis). This might be ordered if you have pain, swelling or redness in an arm or leg, especially post-surgery.
Carotid Artery Ultrasound:
This ultrasound looks at the carotid arteries to rule out narrowing or plaque. It might be done if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stroke, heart issues, vision changes or vertigo.
Obstetrical Ultrasound:
During your pregnancy your doctor may order diagnostic ultrasounds to check on the growth and development of your baby. Obstetrical ultrasounds we offer are:
- First trimester ultrasounds: these are generally done to date the pregnancy. A first trimester scan is also done in cases of first trimester bleeding, abnormal lab results or pelvic pain to look for an ectopic pregnancy.
- Nuchal Translucency: This ultrasound is also known as the 11-14 week ultrasound and is done to measure the tiny flap of skin at the back of baby’s neck – the nuchal translucency. An enlarged measurement might indicate a chromosomal abnormality. During this scan we also check baby’s growth, the location of the forming placenta and early fetal anatomy.
- Anatomy/Anomaly Scan. This ultrasound is done at 18-22 weeks to check your baby’s growth as well as for genetic, chromosomal or physical abnormalities. We literally look at baby from head to toe during this one-hour ultrasound. Your placenta, amniotic fluid and cervix are also assessed.
Should we see abnormalities we can have your ultrasound read as a level II obstetric scan or fetal echocardiogram by specialists in Miami. - Biophysical Profile: This ultrasound is done in the third trimester to look at fetal well-being. We check baby’s movements, amniotic fluid, your placenta and baby’s growth.
